Project -- SQUINT: Streaming Query User Interface

Dr. Svitlana Volkova is a Senior Research Scientist in the Data Sciences and Analytics Group at PNNL; she joined the Lab in October 2015. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University where she was affiliated with the Center for Language and Speech Processing and the Human Language Technology Center of Excellence. Her Ph.D. research focused on developing and applying machine learning and natural language processing techniques to build large-scale social media predictive analytics. She proposed models and practical approaches for automatically inferring latent user demographics from social media data including constrained-resource classification, streaming prediction, and iterative learning and inference with interactive annotation. Svitlana interned at Microsoft Research in 2011, 2012 and 2014 as part of the Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning and Perception teams. She was awarded the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship in 2010 and the Fulbright Scholarship in 2008.

Svitlana’s current research interests include forecasting the future using signals from social media e.g., events, opinion and emotion dynamics, infectious disease outbreaks; deception detection, information biases and factuality assessment in social and news media; multilingual social media analytics; and deep learning for natural language processing applications.
