Dr. Mark Greaves - Analysis in Motion Initiative Lead

Mark Greaves has more than 16 years of experience as a computer science researcher, project leader, and research executive.

Prior to joining PNNL in April, Mark served as Director of Knowledge Systems at Vulcan Inc., the private asset management company for Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. At Vulcan, he led advanced research projects in large scientific knowledge bases, question-answering systems, and digital textbook technology.

Dr. Karl Muller - Chemical Imaging Design Lead

Karl Muller joined EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, at PNNL in August 2010 as a Laboratory Fellow, and is currently the acting Chief Science and Technology Officer in the Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate at PNNL. Karl’s research focuses on the development and utilization of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, and his most recent studies are driven by outstanding and unresolved questions in environmental and materials science that require advanced characterization tools and multi-disciplinary approaches.

Dr. Leslie Blaha - Human-Centered Analytics Research Strategy Lead

Leslie Blaha is a Senior Cognitive Scientist in PNNL’s National Security Directorate. Leslie imagines a future where Smart Adaptive Interfaces will transform the way we use cognitive models to support and enhance human decision making, not just to study cognitive behaviors in laboratories.

Dr. Luke Gosink - Electron Microscopy Use Case Co-Lead

Dr. Luke Gosink is a senior research scientist in the National Security Directorate at PNNL. Dr. Gosink received a B.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California at Davis. He leads a multi-million dollar research portfolio that focuses on developing novel machine learning and statistical aggregation methods that can detect complex events in large amounts of streaming, high-throughput data.

Dr. Shari Matzner - Electron Microscopy Use Case Co-Lead

Dr. Shari Matzner joined PNNL as a graduate intern in 2007 and is now a senior research engineer at PNNL’s Marine Sciences Laboratory.  Prior to joining the lab, she worked as an engineer in the space program at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, developing applications to support the astronauts aboard the space shuttle and developing space station simulators for training ground controllers.

Ryan LaMothe - Insider Threat Detection in the Cloud Use Case Lead

Ryan LaMothe joined PNNL in 2009, as a Researcher in PNNL’s National Security Directorate. Ryan is currently the Lead and Principal Investigator (PI) for PNNL’s Institutional Cloud Computing capability, supporting private, hybrid and public cloud offerings. He has over 16 years experience as a professional software architect and engineer, specializing in both research and enterprise distributed computing solutions.

Dr. Dimitri Zarzhitsky - AIM Software Integration Lead

Dr. Dimitri Zarzhitsky, Ph.D. joined PNNL as a Research Engineer in July 2014.  He is responsible for the architecture, integration, and operation of the messaging infrastructure, in addition to software development resources and tools used by AIM projects.

Dimitri's current research focuses on cloud computing architectures and the application of emerging Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies in computational sciences.

Dr. Dustin Arendt - Principal Investigator

Dr. Dustin Arendt, Ph.D., is a senior visualization scientist in the Visual Analytics group at PNNL, joining the Laboratory in October 2014.

Dustin’s research interests covers the intersection of machine learning, networks, and visual analytics, with a particular focus on novel and intuitive ways to communicate dynamism in complex changing systems. He is pioneering novel and scalable techniques for using storylines to visualize dynamic structure in networks and other forms of data.

Dr. Lisa M. Bramer, Ph.D. is a Research Scientist in the Applied Statistics and Computational Modeling Group at PNNL.

Lisa’s research has spanned over a variety of technical areas including large-scale statistical computing, proteomics, metabolomics, biomarker discovery, microbiome research, electrical energy market, climate forecasting, and machine learning. She joined PNNL in 2013.

George Chin - Dr. George Chin – Principal Investigator

Dr. George Chin, Ph.D., is a Chief Scientist in the Visual Analytics Group at PNNL. George has brought in and led a wide array of research and development projects in the areas of graph analytics, visual analytics, and machine learning for DOE and DoD clients. His most recent research work is focused on streaming dynamic graph analytics, where he is developing scalable methods for identifying cyberattack patterns in real-time computer network traffic, constructing probabilistic graphical models for tracking potential network attack vectors based on software vulnerabilities, and utilizing innovative temporal and geospatial graph metrics to identify leaders (or rabbits) and followers (or wolves) in co-location networks.

Nick Cramer received his Computer Science degree from Central Washington University in 2001. Nick joined the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a visual analytics researcher in 2001. His primary training and interest are in visual analytics, including extensive experience in information visualization, text analytics, and software engineering.
